In Imago Therapy, couples sit across from each other, rather than facing the therapist. This way the couple can talk directly to one another, one at a time. This kind of therapy enhances the true listening and the building of the "muscle" of validating each other and empathizing despite the fact that they do not necessarily agree with each other. From one session to the other the brain creates a new positive imprint on top of the negative imprint of the frustration and unmet need. Imago Therapy in this sense focuses on the paradigm of interconnectedness. It creates a safe and sacred space for each person to "cross the bridge" into their partners world, and seeing experiences through their eyes.
